Maria MaltbyTrust Senior Link
Maria was appointed on to the ASC as a Trust Senior Link on 14 June 2019, after wanting to use her personal and professional skills from both the public and private sector to give something back to the community in a voluntary capacity. As Head of Governance at the Trust, Maria also wished to experience first-hand what it meant to be a governor in the Trust academies so that she can continually help and support the governors in their roles. She believes becoming a governor is truly worthwhile and it is a great opportunity to learn new skills that can be used in day to day and work life.
Maria has worked as Head of Governance and Company Secretary at the David Ross Education Trust since August 2018. She has significant experience of working at a senior level in the private sector (Edexcel national curriculum tests project), public sector (National College for School Leadership, Audit Commission), local government and the NHS in project management and corporate governance roles. In her spare time, Maria is a keen tennis player and enjoys cycling and other fitness activities.
Gary AllenDRET Appointed Governor (Chair)
Gary is currently serving his second term of office as a DRET Appointed Governor, and Chair of the ASC after being re-elected by his fellow governors. He became a governor wanting to make a positive contribution to Havelock on 26 July 2017, following retirement from a 30 plus year career with BP, working on International Projects. Gary also has the assigned link governor responsibility for Safeguarding. Gary's enjoys Sport and travel.
Louise HayesDRET Appointed Governor (Vice Chair)
Louise was appointed a DRET Appointed Governor on 13 May 2014. She is currently serving her second term of office as a governor, and Vice Chair. Louise is an Educational Recruiter, specialising in Teaching and Teaching Support across the Lincolnshire area. She has an excellent understanding of the local teaching market, recruitment, HR and general education as part of her role. Louise is also Chair of a local Primary Academy and understands the lower key stages and the transition process students will undergo. Professionally, Louiseï¿½s passion is education and she is heavily invested in the work she carries out and feels privileged that her position as a governor enables her to better understand the challenges that schools face. At the same time, being able to support schools with her experience of the local market and the teaching pool has allowed her to play a vital role in the recruitment for her schools as part of their interview and selection process. On a personal level, Louise is a proud mum to a toddler who keeps her very busy when not working. Louise is a keen reader who relishes a variety of genres and enjoys the opportunity to travel the UK with her family.
Karen LintonDRET Appointed Governor
Karen was appointed a DRET Appointed Governor on 16 July 2019 and has the assigned governor Link role for Careers. She is currently an Enterprise Adviser for Havelock Academy and saw that becoming the link governor the natural thing to do to support and promote the agenda further. A Careers Adviser by trade with a passion for supporting young people and adults into education, employment and training. Karen works for North East Lincolnshire Council as the Strategic Lead for Skills & Employability. She manages and oversees services that are all about supporting people into work, education and training, raising aspirations and working with business and employment sectors in relation to local opportunities. Through her day job Karen can bring insight to the committee in relation to the careers guidance agenda and the broader role of the Local Authority. She enjoys keeping fit, reading, live music, gardening, spending time with family and friends.
Nigel HolmesDRET Appointed Governor
Nigel was appointed a DRET Appointed Governor on 11 September 2020. He was a former student at the academy and wished to join the ASC to share his skills and experiences. His employment history includes Joinery, Carpentry, Firefighting, and an Engineering Technician Renewable role. Nigel enjoys Keeping fit, Sports, fishing, and DIY.
George SelbyDRET Appointed Governor
George joined the ASC as a DRET Appointed Governor on 29 October 2020, after wanting to give back to the community. He is interested in education, working in the education sector, and has two children, one at school age now so he thought it was an opportunity to learn more about education as a whole. He is employed as a Data Protection and Compliance Officer within the Trust and has over 13 yearsï¿½ experience working in Education, teaching, pastoral care and data and examinations management at both academy and Trust level. His current role and previous role has given him a well-rounded understanding of education as a whole that helps him in his role as Governor. His passions and interests include being a Father of two children, and playing golf and sport.
Joanne WoodhouseStaff Governor
Jo was appointed a Staff Governor on 26 October 2017, and is currently serving her second term of office. She joined the ASC to help make a strategic difference to the direction of Havelock and bring together her passion and dedication for the academy at this level. Jo is keen to share the successes, build on the academy struggles and help take Havelock to Outstanding. Jo is an Assistant Principal with responsibility for the growing Sixth Form and the Personal Development offer which includes the tutorial programme, careers, enrichment and Houses. In her spare time, she loves being outside. She enjoys travelling in her campervan and walking her dog, Missy.
James PhillipsStaff Governor
James was appointed a Staff Governor on 4 April 2017. He has an invested interest in the academy and wishes to provide support, vision and evaluation at governor level. Additionally, to this, he is heavily involved within the teaching union NASUWT which allows him to bring a different perspective to the committee. ï¿½James is a teacher of mathematics and is a House Champion at the academy. He brings a range of skills to the ASC including effective evaluator, strong analytic and an efficient problem solver. His passions and interests include being an active Unionist, staying active and Music.
Helen BellParent Governor
Helen was appointed a Parent Governor on 28 September 2018. She has two children who have completed their educational journey through Havelock, and her youngest daughter started hers in September 2021. She is currently the Link Governor for SEN. Helen works as a Lettings Officer for a Local Social Housing Provider, and through this she brings a wealth of knowledge of the local catchment area for Havelock and some of the issues that families face. She loves keeping fit, especially swimming and spinning. Helen also enjoys going on long hikes with her husband and two dogs.
Michael HowarthParent Governor
Valerie was appointed a DRET Appointed Governor on the ASC on 8 January 2022. Having followed her two sons progress through the academy and her daughter just having started her journey, Valerie is very interested in ensuring that high educational standards are maintained and that all the children are safeguarded well and are given the opportunity to fulfil their full potential whatever their background, special educational needs or disability. Valerie currently owns and manages a small touring caravan park with her husband. Before this she worked as a qualified engineer in the oil and gas sector for 20 years. She has experience of managing projects, personnel, commercials, procurement, and contracts. Many of these skills are transferrable to her governor role including working as part of a team. Valerie is not afraid to challenge decisions to ensure the best outcomes. She is an avid reader and loves to keep fit and travel.Â
Anna has been clerking academies within the Trust since September 2020. Prior to that she spent 33 years working for HM Revenue and Customs, specialising in complaints investigation, including Adjudicator and MP cases. Anna is also Vice Chair and DRET Appointed Governor at Humberston Academy. Anna enjoys gardening, walking her dog and visiting museums and other cities around the world.

What skills, experience and commitment are required?
Governors attend six Academy Scrutiny Committee meetings a year (this may vary slightly depending on the academy) and are asked to support and enrich the academy in a range of other ways including:
- Undertaking school visits outside Academy Scrutiny Committee meetings.
- Taking on a ‘link’ governor role, liaising with academy staff and other governors on areas such as safeguarding, special educational needs and other academy priority areas.
- Sitting on panels related to the school, eg, appeals, complaints, exclusions.
- Participating in the Trust’s governor training and development programme.
We are looking for local people who would be committed to supporting the Trust’s goals. You need time, enthusiasm and a deep commitment to support these academies to be the best they can for their communities. How does governance work at DRET?
At DRET, the Academy Scrutiny Committee provides support and challenge to the Principal in ensuring every child makes good or better progress and that the Academy is achieving targets and continually improving. To maximise the ability of the local governors to focus on this key area the Academy Scrutiny Committee is not required to set strategy or policy, manage financial resources, staff performance and pay, Health and Safety or many of the other areas traditionally associated with a maintained school governing body as these issues are dealt with at Trust level. This means that governors are able to concentrate on the things that really matter – pupil progress, school outcomes and aspiration.
The Academy Scrutiny Committee consists of a group of people who could be parents, community nominees, academy staff, Trust staff and Diocesan members. Each Academy Scrutiny Committee normally consists of 11-15 governors creating a balanced group of experience, skills and connections to support the academy in achieving exceptional performance.
In summary, the key responsibilities of the Academy Scrutiny Committee are:
- Understanding and promoting the Trust’s and the Academy’s vision and ethos.
- Scrutiny and challenge of achievement of targets, school improvement and pupil outcomes. Escalation of any concerns to the Trustees via the Executive.
- Supporting and facilitating parental and community engagement.
The difference between a DRET Academy Scrutiny Committees and a traditional school Governing Body
By comparison to a traditional school Governing Body:
- The Academy Scrutiny Committee’s role is not to “manage” the Academy. This is done through the Trust’s executive management structure (ie Principal, Regional Directors, Executive Management Team) and the Trust Board. Therefore, the Academy Scrutiny Committee is not required to take decisions on staff or financial matters affecting the Academy. As an Academy Scrutiny Committee Member you should have an understanding of strategic issues that impact on the Academy, and be updated on them regularly by the Principal, but you are not required to have direct responsibility for them. Instead the Academy Scrutiny Committee should be in a position to assess the impact of the Academy locally; how it is contributing to the local community, how it is relating to local families and how it understands local issues.
- As the Executive Management and Trust Board takes responsibility for setting educational standards, legal compliance and financial viability, the Academy Scrutiny Committee then has the time to scrutinise and challenge achievement of targets and school improvement, investigate the standards on the ground, to see how they are working, and explore how the Trust ethos is being understood and expressed in the way the Academy operates. As an Academy Scrutiny Committee member, your view as a parent, member of staff or as part of the community is vital in this discussion.
